Expo in East China Province Goes Carbon-Neutral

Carbon sinks will be purchased to neutralize carbon dioxide emissions from an international green development expo, which concluded in east China's Jiangxi Province on December 2.

The organizer of the Fifth World Green Development Investment and Trade Expo will buy carbon sinks to offset the carbon emissions produced from activities such as traffic, catering, and accommodation during the expo, said Liu Linbo, with the Jiangxi provincial carbon emission rights trading center, which was in charge of the expo's carbon-neutral project.

A preliminary assessment put the expo's total carbon emissions at around 435 tonnes, and a more precise calculation is underway.

"The carbon-neutral project demonstrates Jiangxi's efforts to promote low-carbon and green development," said Ren Wenwei, director of the Yangtze program of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) China.

Jiangxi, designated as one of the national ecological civilization pilot zones last year, has made marked progress in upgrading traditional industries, lowering energy consumption and promoting green finance in recent years.

The expo in Nanchang, the provincial capital, attracted over 1,800 entrepreneurs and senior managers, and more than 1,000 enterprises from home and abroad, including Philips, Mercedes-Benz, Huawei, and BYD.

A total of 118 cooperative projects worth more than 209 billion yuan ($30 billion), covering industries such as modern agriculture and new energy, were signed during the three-day event.
